Pilates Yoga mats are available in many different sizes and colours. Some are called Pilates mats, others Yoga mats, but all are used for performing exercises and stretches done on the floor. Generally speaking Yoga mats tend to be slightly thinner than Pilates mats.
A good Pilate’s mat should be firm and at least half an inch thick. A mat that is too soft won’t support your hand and feet especially in challenging positions and exercises. When buying a mat make sure it is long and wide enough for your height.

The mats are not essential for performing floor exercises; but they do make the whole Pilates experience more satisfying. The mats provide more grip and comfort compared to performing exercises on carpet or a towel, which enable more effective execution of exercises and therefore greater benefits.
