However, after practicing mat routines for a while, you need to add resistance to your routine to keep challenging your body. The Pilates ring is a perfect way to do this. Pilates is a system of exercises developed in the 1920s by a German fitness guru Joseph Pilates. Since it was born it has continued to grow, and is getting more popular by the day. Why? Because it works! It is now being embraced worldwide by health professionals like myself and used as not just as exercise, but rehab and injury prevention. If you are looking for a type of exercise that will stretch and strengthen the whole body, while still being adaptable to all levels of fitness, then Pilates is for you. There are many different types of equipment used in Pilates so you will never get bored or fall into repetative routines, my personal favourite being the Pilates ring.
The Pilates Ring (also known as the Magic Circle) is a flexible ring, usually made of metal with padded handles, which provide resistance when the two ends are squeezed together. They vary in resistance levels, and are usually 13 inches wide.
As well as strengthening the core, they are particularly useful for toning the hips, inner thighs, chest and arms. Pilates Rings can not only be used to intensify your current mat routine, they also have a repertoire of their own unique exercises. Different Pilates rings offer different levels or resistance, and are made with variations on the handles.
I would suggest buying a Pilates ring with padded handles on the inside and outside of the circle, as this gives you more variety on the exercises you can do. I would recommend buying a ring that comes with an instructional DVD or video, especially if you have never used them before, or just buy a ring and follow my free pilates ring exercises on this site!


As with starting any new exercise program, it is always a good idea to check with your doctor or qualified Pilate’s instructor to make sure the Pilates Ring is suitable for you.
